WAGONMASTER'S REPORT ON 2012 AUGUST RALLY
The Northeast Chapter 3 annual summer rally was held again at the “Pumpkin Patch RV Resort” in Hermon, Maine.
This year the rally began on Wednesday, August 15th, concluding on Sunday, Aug. 19th.
On Tuesday, Rally Eve, most of the early arrivals joined us for a Dutch-treat, pre-rally dinner at “Angler’s Restaurant” in nearby Hampden. Approximately thirty rally goers caravanned over and occupied the rear dining room at the restaurant.
As the year before the fare choices were many, and delicious.
The rally officially began on early Wednesday afternoon:
Registration: new member enrollment and existing member renewals; seafood orders for Saturday were also taken.
Attendees wishing to participate in the “Iron Chef” contest and/or willing to volunteer to assist with the rally were able to sign-up.
After the above concluded it was time for the very popular social hour, which was followed by the complimentary “Welcome Dinner” which, this year, featured Marcia Hodgkin’s fish chowder and Joan Hurd’s taco delight.
A tray of cookies served as dessert for the evening.
To round out the first evening, rally attendees had their choice of a campfire get-together, play games in the campground’s activity building, or do their own thing.
On Thursday morning rally attendees were offered a complimentary continental breakfast consisting of coffee, tea, orange juice, doughnuts, bagels, toast or English muffins. This same breakfast offering was available every day, starting Wednesday (for the early arrivals) through Saturday.
After breakfast there was another opportunity for late arrivals to register, etc.
Also scheduled for Thurs. morn was a book swap and crafts indoors, or games in the activity building and games outdoors.
Later on Thursday afternoon a brown bag auction was conducted. Members could donate something to the cause, hide it in a bag, and sell it through an auction, to raise money for the chapter treasury. $203 was earned by the auction for the benefit of the chapter.
Concurrent with the afternoon social hour, attendees had the opportunity to sample a selection of wines, which was offered by a local winery, at a wine tasting event, open to all campground guests, in the campground activity building,.
Just prior to the social hour on this day, the “Iron Chef” Hors d’oeuvres contest took place. The contest judges consisted of three members of the “Pumpkin Patch” staff. The winning entry was created by Russell Magee, edging out, narrowly, several other delicious entries. This year's recipe entries are listed on the "Recipe Page" of this website
The pot luck supper, in which many of the rally attendees brought an entrée, salad or dessert dish for all to share.
Due to showers the evening campfire scheduled for Thursday, was canceled.
This concluded the schedule for Thursday.
Friday’s breakfast menu included “egg omelets in a bag” in addition to the standard offerings.
Following breakfast all attendees had a “free day” to do as they wished, such as sight seeing or shopping. The next scheduled item on the agenda for Friday was the daily social hour.
The next scheduled event on Friday evening, was two hours for music and dancing.
A local band, “Rockin’ Ron and The New Society Band”, hired again after bringing the house down last year, returned for an all new show. Their repertoire consisted of playing the big hits from the days of early rock. In addition to the music, lemonade was available during the performance.
On Saturday, after breakfast, a concerted effort to make Lobsterfest Day a success began. Food preparation, cooking equipment set-up and operation was such, that because of the huge effort by all volunteers, the feast was ready 15 minutes before schedule.
Concurrent with the meal preparation, attendees who were not volunteering had the option of playing outdoor games such as horseshoes and bocce among other choices.
After the feast the annual Chapter 3 meeting took place with President Joan Hurd at the helm. Joan reintroduced the VCRs, Larry and Marilyn Forbes who addressed the throng with announcements concerning Escapees, and up and coming “Escapee” events.
Club election of officers was next on the agenda.
Neither the current vice-president nor treasurer wished to be nominated again, so both offices had to be filled by other willing people.
John “Doc” Deroy was nominated and chosen to be the next V.P.
Maureen Deroy was nominated and selected to be the next treasurer.
Next year the offices of president and secretary will be up for reelection.
Later in the early evening after the ice cream social that included a rally cake, a group photograph of this year’s attendees was taken.
Following the group photo the 50-50 raffle drawing was conducted. The winner of half of the $240 collected was VCR Marilyn Forbes. (The remaining $120 was sent to the CARE facility in Livingston, TX immediately after the rally)
Next, the door-prizes were distributed to the winners. The top prize, a flag set, fabricated and donated to the club by Fran Lambert, was won by John Deroy.
A pledge of allegiance to the flag was voiced by all attendees while John held his flag in place on the floor in the center of the room.
The final “event” scheduled for Saturday was “The Chapter 3 Kangaroo Court”.
“Sheriff” Chet Price brought many of the rally members up on charges before the Court.
Presiding “Judge” Fran Lambert, who was high due to a “Moxie” overindulgent, handed out stiff fines, collecting in excess of $41, to the benefit of the chapter’s treasury.
The Kangaroo Court was a hilarious final curtain to Saturday’s festivities.
Sunday morning featured a breakfast of blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs as a concluding highlight of the 2012 Northeast Chapter 3 annual summer rally.
Many thanks to the volunteers, who stepped up and performed the many ancillary duties and tasks that is necessary to make a rally of this magnitude successful.
Also, thanks to the 55 attendees of this rally, without whom, there wouldn’t be a rally.
